Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implant for lower toothYou have more options than ever to replace missing teeth, like dental implants. While they may seem like a new treatment because of their recent popularity, they are supported by decades of success. 500,000 people every year are choosing dental implants, but are they safe? Yes! Most patients with good oral and general health can benefit from the most reliable solution to treat tooth loss.

How Are Dental Implants Different?

Traditional dental prosthetics recreate the portions of teeth above the gum line. Although they are effective, they have their limitations.

Dental implants are unique because they recreate both the root and the crown. This provides a close replica of natural teeth to provide exceptional benefits not possible using conventional methods. Dental implants have over a 95% success rate and are proven to last for decades, but they aren’t right for everyone.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Whether you’re missing one tooth, several teeth, or an entire arch, dental implants can be an option for you. Your implant dentist will examine your mouth and review a CT scan to look for anything that might compromise the success of your treatment, like infections or bone loss. It’s not uncommon to need a little prep work before getting dental implants, like gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, or bone grafting.

Your dentist will also learn more about your medical history and any medications you’re taking. Some can interfere with your body’s ability to heal or fight infections, which can increase the risk of dental implant failure. They’ll also look for any bone issues that may cause poor osseointegration.

If you have pre-existing conditions or take medications, you can still be a candidate for dental implants. However, they may not be right under the following conditions:

  • Autoimmune diseases, diabetes, or allergies.
  • Medications that interfere with calcium processing.
  • Gum disease.
  • Osteoporosis or low bone mass.
  • Heavy smoking or tobacco use.
  • Chemotherapy or radiation of the head or neck.

Your implant dentist will create a personalized treatment plan to ensure your safety and the success of your investment.

Ensure You Dental Implants Last

Your new smile can last for 30 years or longer with the correct care. The biggest threat to the long-term success of dental implants is an infection called peri-implantitis. You can protect your smile from infections by:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing every night.
  • Not smoking or drinking alcohol heavily.
  • Visiting your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.

Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Dental implants are a safe, smart choice to rebuild a complete, beautiful smile.
